How does a one-way car rental work?
You collect the car at one location and return it at a different one. Most major US companies allow one-way rentals between their own branches, but they often add a drop-off (one-way) fee, which depends on the route, the season and whether the company needs cars moved in that direction. Enter both locations when you search so the fee shows up in the total.

What decides the drop-off fee
One-way fees exist because the company has to get the car back to where demand is. Routes where cars naturally flow the 'wrong' way cost more; routes that help rebalance the fleet can cost little or nothing extra.
Seasonality matters. In spring, demand runs out of Florida and Arizona as winter visitors head north, and one-way rentals in the opposite direction can be much cheaper. Popular pairs between big cities — Los Angeles and Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles, Miami and Orlando — often have more competitive one-way pricing.
Mileage, state lines and borders
Most one-way rentals within the US include unlimited mileage, but some one-way and specialty-vehicle rentals cap mileage — check the terms before a long drive.
Driving across state lines is generally allowed. Taking the car into Canada usually requires the company's permission and a Canadian insurance card; driving into Mexico usually requires Mexican liability insurance and is prohibited by many companies for some vehicle classes.
Airport to airport vs. city to city
Airport-to-airport one-way rentals are the easiest to find because every major brand is at every big airport. They also carry airport fees at pickup.
If you are ending at a city branch, check it is open when you arrive and whether it accepts one-way returns — not every small branch does.
What affects the price
The search shows live prices for your dates. These are the things that move them.
- The route and direction of travel
- Season (fleet rebalancing makes some directions cheaper)
- Distance between pickup and drop-off
- Whether pickup or drop-off is at an airport
- Car class — larger vehicles are often restricted or pricier one-way
One-Way Car Rental tips
- Try swapping the pickup or drop-off to a nearby airport — a different pair can change the one-way fee a lot.
- Search the reverse direction if your trip could run either way.
- Confirm unlimited mileage is included before you book a long route.
- Keep fuel and toll receipts until the final bill is settled.
Rental requirements
- A valid driver's license, held for at least a year at most companies. Visitors can usually rent on their home license; if it isn't in English, carry an International Driving Permit or official translation alongside it.
- Minimum age is 21 at most major companies, and drivers under 25 pay a daily young-driver surcharge. New York and Michigan require companies to rent to drivers from 18, with surcharges.
- A credit card in the main driver's name. Some locations accept debit cards with extra checks — often a return travel itinerary at airports, a larger deposit or a credit check.
- International renters should also bring a passport.

Insurance and deposit
- Collision and loss damage waivers (CDW/LDW) are optional. Before you accept one at the counter, check whether your own auto policy or a credit card benefit already covers rental cars — many do, with conditions.
- Liability cover varies by state and company. Supplemental liability (SLI) raises the limit and is worth considering if you don't have a personal auto policy, including as an international visitor.
- A security deposit is held on your card at pickup and released after the car is returned and checked. It can take several business days to disappear from your statement, and holds are larger on debit cards and premium cars.

Fuel policy and additional fees
- Full-to-full is usually the cheapest fuel policy: you collect the car full and return it full. Prepaid fuel only saves money if you return the tank nearly empty, and refueling charges on a car returned short are well above pump prices.
- Airport rentals include airport concession recovery fees and facility charges on top of the rate. State and local rental taxes apply everywhere.
- Other common extras: additional-driver fees, young-driver surcharges, toll-program charges, one-way drop fees, child seats and late-return charges. Read the rental terms before you pay so you know which charges are included and which are added at the counter.
