Do Rental Cars Have a Mileage Limit?

If you're planning a road trip, mileage is one of the first things to check. The good news: most standard US rentals don't limit it. The exceptions are worth knowing.

When mileage is usually unlimited

Standard car classes — economy through full-size sedans and most SUVs — rented from major companies at US airports and city branches typically include unlimited mileage for driving within the US.

When a mileage cap is more likely

• Specialty vehicles: luxury, exotic and some premium cars, plus large passenger and cargo vans.

• Local and independent rental companies, which set their own terms.

How mileage caps work

A capped rental includes an allowance — per day or for the whole rental — and charges a per-mile fee above it. The fee can make a long road trip much more expensive than the rate suggests.

How to check

• Look for "unlimited mileage" or a mileage allowance in the rate details before you pay.
• Confirm it on the rental agreement at the counter.
• If you're driving to another state, ask whether any travel restrictions apply.

Protect yourself on a long trip

• Photograph the odometer at pickup and return.
• Keep the rental agreement until the final bill is settled.
• For very long trips, consider whether a one-way rental with unlimited mileage beats a round trip.
