You remain responsible for tolls and any penalty incurred while the car is in your care. Because the vehicle is registered to the supplier, the notice reaches them first.
- For fines, the supplier identifies you to the issuing authority and charges an administration fee for doing so.
- The fine itself is then pursued by the authority directly, so expect two separate demands.
- Administration fees are charged per incident, so three separate speeding notices means three fees.
- Unpaid electronic tolls are handled the same way, which makes an unpaid toll far more expensive than the toll.
Reducing the risk
Ask at pickup whether the car has a toll transponder and how it is billed. Where road pricing is enforced by camera — urban congestion or low-emission zones — check whether your route crosses one before you drive, because these are rarely signposted in a way visitors notice in time.
