What do I need to bring to the rental counter?

A licence, a card in the main driver's name, and ID. The details vary by country and are the most common reason pickups fail.

At the counter

Requirements are set by the supplier and the country you are collecting in, and they are enforced strictly. Turning up without the right documents generally means losing the booking without a refund.

  • A full, valid driving licence held for the minimum period the supplier requires, often one to three years.
  • A credit card in the main driver's name, embossed at some suppliers. Debit cards are frequently refused for the deposit.
  • Passport or national ID, especially when renting abroad.
  • An International Driving Permit where your licence is not in the local language or script.
  • Your booking reference and, for prepaid rates, the voucher.

The card matters more than people expect

The deposit is held on a card in the main driver's name. A card belonging to a passenger, spouse or employer will usually be refused even if the name is similar. If the driver has no credit card, check the supplier's debit card policy before you book rather than at the desk.

Rental terms differ by supplier, country and vehicle class. This article describes what usually applies — the agreement you sign at the counter is what governs your rental, so read it before signing.
