Understanding the sequence explains most billing surprises. A rental typically touches your card at three separate points.
- At booking: nothing for pay-at-counter rates, or the full amount for prepaid rates.
- At pickup: the balance if unpaid, plus any extras, surcharges and taxes added at the desk, plus the deposit hold.
- After return: fuel shortfalls, cleaning, late-return hours, damage, and administration fees for tolls or fines.
Charges that arrive late
Toll and traffic-fine administration fees are the usual culprits. Authorities often take weeks to notify the supplier, who then charges the fee to the card on file and forwards your details. A charge months later is normal for this category and is not necessarily an error.
If you think a charge is wrong
Ask the supplier for an itemised invoice before disputing with your bank. A chargeback raised without one is usually decided in the supplier's favour if their agreement covers the charge.
