When you book your rental car can be just as important as where you book it. Here's what the data shows about optimal booking timing.
For Domestic Trips
Book 1–2 weeks in advance for the best rates on domestic rentals. Much further ahead and inventory is limited; closer to the date and prices spike.
For International Trips
Book 4–8 weeks in advance for popular international destinations, especially during summer, Christmas, and Easter. Popular beach destinations in peak season can sell out weeks ahead.
Never Book on a Friday or Saturday
Weekend demand is high, so prices peak on Fridays and Saturdays. Midweek is the best time to search and book — Tuesday and Wednesday typically show the lowest prices.
Avoid Holiday Peaks
Christmas, New Year, Thanksgiving, spring break, and school summer holidays all drive prices up significantly. If you must travel at peak times, book as early as possible.
Should You Book Flexible Rates?
Flexible (free cancellation) rates are usually only slightly more expensive than non-refundable rates. Book flexible, then re-check closer to the date — prices sometimes drop and you can re-book at the lower price.
Last-Minute Bookings
Last-minute deals do occasionally appear, but relying on them is risky — you may end up with no availability or be forced to accept an overpriced or unsuitable vehicle.
