Short answer
Most companies allow a short grace period after your scheduled return time. After that, you're charged extra hours and then a full extra day, sometimes with a late fee, and the extra time may be billed at a higher rate than you booked. If you'll be late, call or use the app to extend — an unannounced, very late return can be treated far more seriously.
Rental days are counted in 24-hour periods from your pickup time, so even an hour late can cost more than you expect. Here's how late returns are handled.
The grace period
Most major companies allow a short grace period, commonly under an hour, before any charge applies. Don't rely on it — the exact length depends on the company and location, and some don't offer one on certain rates.
What you're charged after that
- Extra hours: charged per hour until they add up to the price of a day.
- An extra day: once hourly charges reach the daily rate, you pay for a full extra day.
- A higher rate: the extra time may be billed at the location's current rate, not the rate you booked, and discounted weekly or weekend rates can be recalculated if you go over.
- Late fees: some companies add a fee on top.
- Coverage: any daily waivers or extras you bought are charged for the extra time too.
If you don't contact the company
Keeping the car well past the return date without telling the company can breach your agreement. In serious cases the company can report the car as overdue or stolen. Your own insurance or credit card coverage may also not apply beyond the dates on your agreement.
How to extend a rental
- Call the pickup location or use the company's app before your return time.
- Confirm the rate for the extra time.
- Get the new return time in writing or on your updated agreement.
Returning after hours
Many locations have an after-hours key drop. You usually stay responsible for the car until staff check it in, so photograph the car, fuel gauge and odometer when you leave it.
Returning early
Returning early isn't always cheaper. Your rate may be recalculated for the shorter rental, which can raise the daily price. See what happens if you return early or late.
Plan your return time
Set your return time generously when you book — if it stays inside the same 24-hour period, it often costs nothing extra. It matters most on weekend rentals, and on long-term rentals where rate bands can change.
