Pre-existing damage that is not on the check-out sheet becomes your damage by default. The burden of proof sits with you, so create the proof before you leave.
- Photograph or film all four sides, the roof, and both bumpers in good light, with the branch visible in shot.
- Photograph the wheels and alloys specifically — kerbing is one of the most commonly charged damages.
- Photograph the windscreen for chips, and the interior for stains, burns and tears.
- Photograph the fuel gauge and the odometer.
- Check that every mark you can see is recorded on the check-out sheet, and get the sheet amended before signing if not.
At return
Repeat the process, especially the fuel gauge and odometer. If you return out of hours to a key drop, your photographs are the only record of the car's condition at handover, so take more than you think you need.
