Many major US rental companies allow their cars into Canada from US locations, as long as you tell them and carry the right paperwork — usually the rental agreement and a Canadian non-resident insurance card the company provides. Some vehicle classes and locations are excluded, and one-way rentals ending in Canada are much more restricted.

Check the rental company's policy first
Most major companies allow cars rented at US locations to be driven into Canada, but policies vary by company, location and vehicle class. Before you book:
- Confirm the pickup location allows travel to Canada.
- Check whether your car class is permitted.
- Ask whether any mileage limits apply outside the US.
Tell the company at pickup that you're driving to Canada.
Documents to carry at the border
- Your passport, or another document accepted for land entry, such as a passport card or NEXUS card for eligible travelers.
- The rental agreement, showing you're authorized to drive the car.
- A Canadian non-resident insurance card, which the rental company usually provides for cars allowed into Canada.
- Your driver's license.
One-way rentals into Canada
Dropping a US rental in Canada is far more restricted and often not offered, because the car has to come back across the border. If you need to end the trip in Canada, check availability carefully or plan a round trip.

- Speed limits and distances are in kilometers.
- Rules differ by province — for example, right turns on red are not allowed on the island of Montreal.
- Fuel is sold by the liter.
