Collecting a rental car at the airport can be quick and painless — or a stressful, expensive surprise. Here's how to make it the former.
Have Your Documents Ready
Before you approach the counter, have these ready: - Your booking confirmation (printed or on your phone) - A valid driving licence - Your passport (for international rentals) - The credit card you used to book (some companies require it to be in the driver's name) - Any insurance documents you're relying on
Know What You're Being Offered at the Counter
The counter agent will try to upsell: insurance, GPS, fuel pre-purchase, car upgrades. Know in advance what you need and politely decline what you don't.
Inspect the Car Before You Drive
Walk around the car and photograph every scratch, dent, and chip before you leave the car park. Report any damage to the agent and make sure it's noted on the rental agreement.
Check the Fuel Level
Confirm the fuel level matches what's written on your agreement. If it's less, report it immediately.
Understand the Return Process
Ask where and how to return the car. Some airports use off-site facilities accessed by shuttle. Know the return time — late returns can be expensive.
Off-Airport Alternatives
If you're not in a rush, picking up from a city-centre location the following morning can save 10–30% on the total price, as airport concession fees won't apply.
