Car rental insurance is one of the most misunderstood aspects of renting a car. Here's everything you need to know — in plain English.
Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)
CDW limits your financial liability if the rental car is damaged in a collision. It does not cover theft, personal injury, or third-party damage. CDW is usually optional but heavily sold at the counter.
Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)
LDW combines CDW with theft protection. It's a broader form of cover that's often sold as a single package.
Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI)
SLI covers damage or injury you cause to third parties — other cars, property, or people. Third-party liability is usually included in your base rate in most countries, but the limits may be low.
Personal Accident Insurance (PAI)
PAI covers medical expenses for you and your passengers in the event of an accident. Check whether your travel or health insurance already covers this.
Does My Credit Card Cover Me?
Many premium credit cards (Visa Signature, Mastercard Gold, Amex Platinum) offer CDW when you pay for the rental with that card. Read the fine print carefully — coverage varies significantly.
Do I Need It All?
For most travellers: check your credit card first. If it covers CDW, decline the rental company's CDW. Check your travel insurance for personal accident cover. SLI is usually worth having if the base policy limits are low.
One Important Warning
Some countries (USA, Ireland) require you to carry a physical insurance certificate. Always carry the documentation for any coverage you're relying on.
